As the industry evolves toward a more sustainable automotive future, Kia is doing its part to make EV ownership more accessible to more people by continually expanding its electrified offerings. The Kia Niro EV and EV6 are two excellent battery-powered SUVs with versatile accommodations, high-tech features, and practical range. Drivers from Levittown to South Brunswick Township can find them both here at Ciocca Kia in Trenton. But which one is right for you?

While both models occupy the compact crossover class, they offer distinct characteristics and advantages that make them suitable for different needs and lifestyles. To help you determine which fully electric Kia model is a better fit for your daily drives, here's an overview of their distinguishing attributes.

Performance

Kia Niro EV

The Kia Niro EV keeps things simple with two trims and a lone powertrain option. All Niro EV models are motivated by a single motor that drives the front wheels with 201 horsepower and 188 pound-feet of torque.

Kia EV6

If you're seeking more zip from your electric crossover, the Kia EV6 has you covered with multiple powertrain options. Single-motor models drive the rear wheels with 225 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel-drive models add a second motor, boosting output to 320 horsepower and 446 pound-feet of torque. And if that still leaves you wanting more, you can turn up the heat with the new Kia EV6 GT. With a prodigious 576 horsepower and 545 pound-feet of torque, the EV6 GT sprints to 60 mph in a supercar-esque 3.2 seconds, reaching the quarter mile in just 11.6 seconds.

Range and Charging

Kia Niro EV

The Kia Niro EV feeds its electric motor with a 64.8-kWh battery pack that provides an EPA-estimated 253 miles of range-although Edmunds reviewers achieved 280 miles in their independent evaluation. The Niro EV can fully replenish its battery in less than seven hours or under 45 minutes with 85-kW DC fast charging. That makes it a practical and more cost-effective way to electrify your Ewing commute.

Kia EV6

The Kia EV6's 77.4-kWh battery provides an impressive 310 miles of EPA-estimated range with RWD. The more powerful AWD powertrain achieves an estimated 282 miles for the base model (Wind) or 252 miles for the higher-equipped GT-Line.) The EV6 GT's blacktop-burning performance comes at the expense of range, which is rated by the EPA at 206 miles.

The EV6's 11-kW onboard charger helps it achieve similar Level 2 charging times to the Niro EV (approximately seven hours), despite having a larger battery capacity. For extended journeys, the EV6 is among the few electric vehicles to leverage 800-volt/350-kW ultra-fast charging infrastructure, making long-distance road trips more practical. At a compatible charging station, the EV6 can add ~70 miles of range in about five minutes and ~217 miles in under 18 minutes.

Another advantage that the EV6 has over the Niro EV is its V2L (vehicle-to-load) port, which allows it to supply electricity to external items, including other electric vehicles.

Size and Accommodations

Kia Niro EV

  • L x W x H (inches): 174 x 71.8 x 61.8
  • Headroom (inches): 40.5 front / 38.1 rear
  • Legroom (inches): 41.5 front / 36.9 rear
  • Hip room (inches): 53.3 front / 52.7 rear
  • Shoulder room (inches): 56.3 front / 55.4 rear
  • Cargo Space (cubic feet): 22.8 - 63.7

Positioned at the border of the subcompact and compact segments, the Kia Niro EV offers impressive interior space for its size. Its traditional boxy SUV styling doesn't just give it a bold aesthetic; it also contributes to roomy passenger accommodations and a sizable max cargo volume.

Kia EV6

  • L x W x H (inches): 184.8 x 74.4 x 60.8
  • Headroom (inches): 36.8 front / 38 rear
  • Legroom (inches): 42.4 front / 39 rear
  • Hip room (inches): 54.9 front / 53.2 rear
  • Shoulder room (inches): 57.8 front / 55.6 rear
  • Cargo Space (cubic feet): 24.4 - 50.2

The Kia EV6's larger exterior dimensions contribute to its larger passenger volume. The EV6 has roomier rear seats and more hip room and shoulder room all around compared to the Niro EV. However, while its sleek coupe-like profile gives it a sportier look, it results in slightly less front headroom and reduced max cargo space. That said, the EV6 provides a bit more carrying capacity when all seats are upright.
